This is a technical topic and one which requires you to have some understanding of printing and CMYK inks and printing through dots.

It relates to a prepress tool used to achieve consistent colour reproduction.

It is advisable to do this for all artworks which contain a high Grey component or combination of CMY.
Shown with the help of an image.

Advantages
1. Consistency in colour reproduction
2. reduces ink % on the paper. Allowing better trapping of colours.
3. Faster drying of inks due to lesser ink on paper.
4. Lesser chances of set-off.

Disadvantages
1. Expensive to do GCR process on artworks.
2. Difficult to tweak colours during the print run.
